First, Break All The Rules is one of my favorite leadership books. Markus Buckingham and Curt Coffman do a great job of challenging many leadership assumptions with the data gathered in their research of what truly makes organizations successful. This book contains information gathered from interviews with over 80,000 managers from over 400 different companies. This is the largest study of its kind ever conducted.

This team sought out to determine what makes a great manager of an organization. At the outset, the research generated thousands of research questions to try to determine what distinguishes higher performing organizations from those that don’t perform nearly so well. In the end, they narrowed the questions down to 12 questions that allow you to distinguish the strongest organizations from their counter parts.

I have learned that asking the right questions of your team is often the key to unlocking the potential for greatness lying beneath the surface. These 12 questions can provide some great insights into the health of your team and help identify key aspects that need to be addressed and worked on.

4. In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?

6. Is there someone at work who encourages my development?

7. At work, do my opinions seem to count?

8. Does the mission/purpose of my company make me feel my job is important?

9. Are my co-workers committed to doing quality work?

10. Do I have a best friend at work?

11. In the last six months, has someone at work talked to me about my progress?

12. This last year, have I had opportunities to work and grow?

Over the years as a leader of multiple organizations I have kept a copy of these questions handy as a self-check list to help me work towards making our organizations great places to work.
