How do you face fear?

POWERED BY PURPOSE

ANDY STANLEY

Perhaps the starting point for purpose is “Who am I here for?” not What am I here for?”

“As a leader, you will be called upon to go first. That will require courage. But in stepping out you will give the gift of courage to those who are watching.

Andy began his talk by sharing a lesson from one of his life long mentors. This mentor talk him that there are two immutable laws in our lives: everybody has to eat and live indoors. For those people in our world who don’t have these basic needs met they are not really concerned about purpose. If you don’t have these in your life you don’t have the margin to worry about your purpose. All of us here have those needs met and therefore have the margin to examine our purpose.

At some point in our lives we all will be interested in purpose. For some of us a funeral will spark that interest. For others it will be a birthday in our 50’s that will spark a deeper look into our purpose. We all have within us to have a meaningful purpose in life. There is something in you that want more out of life. All of us desire for people to be able to talk about our lives as having had meaning and purpose at our funerals.

We all have it in us to find meaning and purpose, but most people are never powered by Purpose! I have never met someone who has been doing something meaningful and full of purpose their entire lives and turned to me and said, “Andy I’m sick of it”

Definition of Purpose: The reason for which something exists or is accomplished.

How do you face fear?

1. You must be clear on your purpose

  • The best athletes in world are clear on purpose
  • I got to see all the little moments that prepared them for the big moments

2. Clear Purpose changes behavior.

  • When we have a clear why anything is possible

3. Clear purpose allow us to suffocate our fear

  • This allows us to be fearless
  • John Smoltz was asked by braves to change from being a starter to a closer late in his career. He was curious, he was intentional , he was never afraid to step into what was uncomfortable.
  • Went on to lead league in saves with 50+ saves and became a Hall of Famer as not only one of best starters ever, but also one of the all-time best closers.

4. Lean into fear with purpose

  • How do we lean into fear?
  • There are lots of moments in our day when we get an opportunity to lean into fear.
  • It’s all our about our motivation, our purpose.
  • Family will drive us to do something dangerous, take risk more than money.

5. You must be curious

  • You can’t find what’s best for you if you are not curious!
  • We cannot be fearless without being curious about what is possible in our lives.

6. Can’t be fearless without taking ownership of things in our lives.

7. You must teach your self a new story.

  • Dan Jansen was getting ready for his last Olympics, he was known as the heart break kid, physically great but mentally questionable. Had never won gold, fulfilled this potential.
  • Coach told him: “We are going to teach ourselves a new story”
  • His Coach ask him, “What do you want?” His answer: “To break the 36 sec barrier”
  • His Coach to him to write 35.99 everyday and also write I love the 5000 meter, which he had stated that he actually hated.
  • He went on to break the 36 second barrier 4 times before Olympics, and he then won gold.
  • When we own the story we tell ourselves and when we have the courage to change the story we tell ourselves, we can do some amazing things.

What is story you are telling yourself today that is holding you back?

What is the story you need to tell yourself to achieve your dreams?

8. In order to be fearless you must own your own mistakes.

  • When we are fearless things may not go as planned.
  • We can’t be fearless without being resilient.
  • Had to evaluate situation when Billy Donovan expressed interest in going to NBA, she negotiated deal for him to go to Orlando Magic very quickly, he does press conference announcing him as Head Coach of Magic, the he changes mind. This is after the whole world knows.
  • Molly took this time to do some self-reflection on what they could have done wrong during this process. To ask the hard questions of herself and her team on how something like this comes to pass.
  • She asked questions about why he changed his mind.
  • What was our responsibility in this not working out?
  • We should have asked him tough questions about why he wanted to go to the NBA, to make this change? We didn’t ask those questions. We rushed into the deal and didn’t reflect on all the details we should have with Billy.
  • You must face your problems head on. If you want a problem to get awesome, put it in a petri dish.
  • Resiliency-You must recover quickly from bad moments and failures.

We can’t be fearless without being resilient.

9. You have to be present to be fearless!

  • You must be fearless in the moment.
  • 5 weeks pregnant with twins, with 5 month’s old
  • Had to go to lunch with Doc Rivers right after this
  • 3 kids in 12 months, had to park it and lock in with Doc

10. You can’t be fearless without managing your energy.

  • You have people who call and you dread it, you want to hit decline. We have to manage who we let in our lives and guard against those who suck energy out of us.
  • Managing our energy is a key to being fearless.
  • Who deserves your energy?
  • Being careful about managing our energy helps us to be more resilient.

11. You must have boldness, you must learn to take calculated risk

  • We grow when we get a little bit uncomfortable.

12. We have to step into our opportunities, because they are not going to come to us.

  • When we ask for advice we get a job. When we ask for a job we get advice. When we ask for advice we get business. When ask for business we get advice.
  • Molly lived in 1 bedroom apartment that she negotiated free rent in exchange for teaching tennis lessons for nine years at the start of her career. This was a moment in time where she was creating her platform.

Little moments create really big outcomes in our lives.

  • It’s not about the achievements. It’s not about the chase. It is what happens along the way that creates fulfillment in life.

Lean into fearless moments! You will change your life and change the life of others!
